What is CELTA? +

Cambridge ESOL's Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults is one of the world's foremost initial qualifications for people who want to become professional teachers of English language. It is accepted by teaching organisations throughout the world.

Who is the CELTA programme for? +

The programme is for people with little or no previous experience of teaching, or those who have teaching experience outside of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) or English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).

What do I need to join the programme? +

  • Be 18 years or over
  • Have a level of English equivalent to C1 (CEFR) or above
  • Have an educational level equivalent to degree entry
  • Successfully complete the application task and interview

What does the programme include? +

The course will teach you the principles of effective teaching. It will provide a range of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners and will give you hands-on teaching practice.
  • CELTA covers five key topics: Learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning
  • Context Language analysis and awareness
  • Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
  • Planning and resources for different teaching contexts
  • Developing teaching skills and professionalism.

How will I be assessed? +

You will be assessed throughout the course and your final grade is based on your progress by the end of the course. The main way you are assessed is through teaching practice – you will teach for a total of 6 hours, working with classes at two levels of ability. You will also complete four written assignments.

What attendance is required? +

100% attendance is required.

What qualification can be achieved after the programme? +

The CELTA is awarded to candidates who have completed the programme and who have met the assessment criteria for all written and practical assignments. CELTA can be used to get a job in language schools in the UK and abroad. You can progress onto the Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults (DELTA), which can be taken after a minimum of 2 year’s teaching experience.

When do I need to pay the Course fee? +

The Course fee of £1300 includes the Cambridge examination fee. Full payment needs to be made two weeks before the course starts. Late enrolments will be accepted upon full immediate payment.

How do I apply? +

You can apply using the CELTA application form or by calling 02392 732113 and speaking to a member of TEG Portsmouth. You will also need to complete a pre-interview task, which can be sent to you. You will be asked to come to an interview at TEG Portsmouth or on Skype (Skype name: CELTAcourse).
