Why study English in the UK

Why it’s a good idea to study English in the UK?

Have you ever wondered why people want to learn English? Well, English is a universal language, it is the official language in over 80 countries and the most influential with regards to media, politics, and research. This is why the ability to speak English is valued by universities and employers. Therefore by improving your English skills, you are making an important investment in your future. Additionally, by learning English, you will gain confidence when travelling, communicating and for business purposes.

The question though is where to study? You can study in the the UK, the USA, Ireland or Australia. In this blog, we’ll talk about the 5 reasons why learning English in the UK is the best option.

  1. The Birthplace of English

Most importantly, the UK is the birthplace of the English language. When studying another language, it’s important to study it in its native country so that you have an authentic immersion experience.

  1. Authentic experience and total immersion

Undeniably, the biggest advantage of learning English in the UK is that you will need to speak English all of the time. For example while shopping, going to restaurants and pubs, or trying out new activities. By practising your English skills in real-life situations, you will consolidate what you have learnt in class. You will have the chance to practice all day long and gain an authentic experience of learning the language.

You will also be able to hear native speakers using slang language, you will hear different accents and the proper intonation. This is something that you won’t be able to experience if you are learning English in another country and something that no coursebook can offer.

Therefore, just by listening to locals and by constantly practising, you will improve your English understanding, your listening and your vocabulary will massively improve.

On top of this, you will have the opportunity to stay with a host family and therefore experience the everyday life of a British person.

  1. International friends and diversity

Like yourself, there are thousands of people who want to come to the UK to study English. This will enable you to meet new people from around the world, learn about new cultures and traditions and make friends from across the globe.

Apart from fellow learners of English, the UK has a rich multicultural atmosphere and thus you will have the chance to meet people from all over the world, try food from different cuisines and become richer in knowledge.

  1. Weekend trips

In the UK, there is a relatively cheap transportation system (with student discounts if you have a student card like the one TEG English gives to its students) and thus you can easily visit busy and cosmopolitan cities in the UK, serene villages, ancient castles, cultural and historical landmarks, and so on. In the UK, you can also experience famous music festivals, amazing events and great (and often free to visit) museums. The UK can cater to everyone’s tastes!

Most language schools, including TEG English, have an active Social Programme and travel with their students around the UK.

  1. Guaranteed quality

If you decide to study English in the UK, make sure you register in an accredited language school as they are regularly inspected and provide high standards of teaching, accommodation and support.

A Friendly reminder

Don’t only make friends with people from your own country! We all know it’s easier to connect with people that speak the same language as you do, who have the same culture and traditions and who have similar ideology as you do; BUT don’t forget that the main reason you decided to go to the UK is to improve your English skills. One of the most important ways to achieve this is by becoming friends with international students and by speaking English. Remember, everyone is here to explore a new country, to meet people and to improve their English skills. Do you want to know what is the easiest way to start a conversation? Simply ask people where they are from and ask them questions about their country!
